Proving Your Identity
Whilst we accept that asking for information regarding your identity can sometimes be seen as an inconvenience, the measures we take are aimed solely at reducing fraud and other criminal activities related to borrowing money. At times this does cause a minority of our customers a problem, however we are sure that you share our aim of trying to reduce financial related crime.
We have set out below the documents we ask for and why we ask for them, we trust that you find this informative.
Why do we ask you security questions when you call us?
It’s important to us that your security is protected and any confidential information relating to your agreement or quotation with us is discussed with you alone or your authorised third parties. When we engage with you initially we will obtain certain personal information that will allow us to identify you on future conversations such as your mother’s maiden name, date of birth or registration number (for existing agreements) for example.
Why do we ask you for proof of identity by way of documentation?
Since 1994, when the Money Laundering Regulations became law, all banks, building societies, and other businesses providing financial services have had to put procedures in place to stop criminals from using them to launder money.
When we ask you for proof of identity, it doesn’t mean we suspect you of being a criminal. The law requires financial service firms to identify all new customers.
We also ask existing customers for proof of identity because we must ensure that we hold correct and up to date information should we need to contact you.
Why do we ask for your full UK driving licence as proof of identity?
A full and valid UK driving licence cannot be easily forged and contains information we require to help verify your identity, such as your full name, date of birth and signature.
I’m a Director of a Limited company, why do you need my UK driving licence?
To help prevent business related finance crime when signing an agreement on behalf of your company we require your current UK driving licence to verify details such as your full name, date of birth and signature and to also ensure these details match those registered with Companies House.
Why do we ask for proof of address and a full UK driving licence?
The same document cannot be used to prove both identity and address, so from time to time we may also ask for proof of address in addition to your full UK driving licence. This is because we must confirm that you live at the address supplied to us.
What do we accept as proof of address?
A valid proof of address is a postal bank statement or utility bill (water, electricity, gas, land line telephone or council tax bills) dated within the last 3 months and showing your name and address as supplied on your application.
We do not accept credit card statements, mobile phone bills or car insurance policies because these documents can be easily obtained and are difficult to verify.
If you are unable to provide a valid proof of address please ask the retailer to contact us to confirm why and to discuss what other proofs are available as in some instances we may accept an alternative.
